Apple Brown Betty
An American classic beloved by all. Tart pie apples work best here, but, for a wonderful apple aroma, include at least one McIntosh or Gravenstein apple.
Ingredients
No-stick cooking spray
6 cups peeled, sliced tart apples
1/2 cup maple sugar or brown sugar
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest, optional
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 tablespoon canola oil
1 1/4 cups graham cracker crumbs
Preparation
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Spray a 2-quart (2-liter) baking dish with cooking spray.
2. In a mixing bowl, combine apples, sugar, lemon juice, lemon zest, if using, and vanilla.
3. In a separate bowl, sprinkle canola oil over cracker crumbs and blend to mix.
4. Layer the apples and graham cracker crumbs in the prepared dish. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until the betty is browned and bubbling.
