Mystery Apples

Postby ciearams » Thu Jul 06, 2006 1:34 am

We moved into a house that was built in, I think, the early '70s and they had an apple orchard.

However, we have no idea what two of the apple trees are. The apples are generally very large- about two fists size, sweet and slightly sour, when they are freshley ripe in August they are very crispy, very juicy and a light red (where the sun hit them) and bright green color.

If anyone has any idea's as to what they might be... I know a postman once mentioned something about them starting with a D, but I forget the whole name he said

Thanks for your advice!

There are 5,000 + varieties of Apples. It's not unusual for even a small orchard to have a variety or two that are exclusive to that orchard. In that case the orchard usually gives their Apple a name. You didn't give your location.Let me know and maybe I can suggest an historic orchard that could help you, or look up one on the web.
It appears you have been blessed.

It's also possible that the mystery apples were never named, because they were seedling trees, used exclusively for making cider.

If you think the name starts with a D, did you check these names?
