Bee killer imperils crops
A tiny parasite, colloquially known as a 'vampire mite,' is devastating honeybees. That worries experts because honeybee-pollinated crops are valued at more than $15 billion a year.
The impact of this on the commercial apple market has already been felt, as growers in Virginia have had to look outside the state for pollination help since the mite has devastated the bee population in that region.
