Taiwan lifts ban on state apples

Taiwan yesterday dropped its four-month ban on U.S. apples, which had taken a juicy bite out of the income of Washington state growers, after an agreement was reached on closer inspections for a codling moth that devastates the fruit.

This announcement reverses the four month old ban, put in place after shipments last September and October were found to contain codling moths. In an agreement put in place in 2003 the US is banned from shipping to Taiwan if codling moths are found in three shipments throughout a season.
