PLU codes have been used by supermarkets since 1990 to make check-out and inventory control easier, faster, and more accurate. Most PLUs are 4 digit codes, but if its a five digit code starting with a 9, that means the fruit has been organically grown. If it's five digits and starts with an 8, then its genetically engineered produce. An apple variety can also have two different PLUs depending on the size of the apple -- small or large, and there are different PLU codes by country.
Here's a U.S. list of apples and their corresponding PLUs.
