Apple growers get creative

Matt Darrow circled the hillsides at Green Mountain Orchards on Thursday, surveying the state of his fruit.
It's about time to start picking the McIntosh, the mainstay of the family's 125-acre farm, but the apples are small due to a dry summer.

So Darrow had to decide: pick the fruit now, which would mean a smaller yield and less overall profit, or wait for the apples to hopefully grow and risk losing some of them as they ripen and fall.
