Apple Varieties

Cheddar Cross
Parentage / Origin: Allington Pippin x Star of Devon; Raised in 1916 in England, introduced in 1949
Harvest / Season: Harvest: September
Description: Medium in size, flattened shape, and indistinctly ribbed at the eye and on the body. The skin is green and covered with russet. The creamy white finely textured flesh is subacid to slightly sweet in flavor. Savory with mellow acidity; crisp, juicy.
Tree Characteristics: It is resistant to scab and spurs freely. The tree growth is very dense, moderately vigorous.

Chehalis
Parentage / Origin: Probably a Golden Delicious Seedling; Near Chehalis river, Oakville, WA, 1955. Introduced in 1965.
Harvest / Season: Harvest: Late September to mid-October
Description: Large greenish yellow apple, usually with a pink blush on exposed side. Resembles Golden Delicious in looks and flavor but larger, crisper and more elongated. Crisp, cream colored flesh. Medium-fine texture. Sweet, slightly honeyed, juicy eating and baking apple.
Tree Characteristics: Bears a good crop. Moderately vigorous tree is self pollinating. Highly scab resistant: Somewhat mildew resistant. Excellent apple for organic growers who like a big sweet, yellow apple.

Chenango Strawberry
(Also known as: Strawberry Chenango)
Parentage / Origin: Known since 1854, New York
Harvest / Season: Harvest: Late August - September
Description: Medium to large fruit smooth, yellowish or greenish-white skin striped with crimson. Flesh juicy, mildly subacid, aromatic with a hint of strawberries. Skin smooth and tough. Pick when skin starts to turn milky.
Tree Characteristics: Tree medium size, vigorous, long lived. Regular bearer. Extended ripening time makes it suitable for a home orchard.

Cherry Cox
Parentage / Origin: Sport of Cox Orange Pippin; Denmark
Harvest / Season: Midseason ripening.
Description: Often shows dark red stripes and splashes of the solid red fruit. Keeps in storage one month longer than others of it's type.

Chestnut Crab
Parentage / Origin:
Harvest / Season: Harvest: late August - September; Season: September - November
Description: Large cooking and dessert crab apple. Attractive, reddish bronze fruit.  Crisp, juicy sweet flesh with a pleasing nut-like flavor. Ripens over a long period.
Tree Characteristics: Resistant to cedar rust.

Parentage / Origin: Johnathan x Delicious; Raised in 1917, Iowa Experiment Station. Introduced in 1966.
Harvest / Season: Harvest: early October
Description: Fruits are medium in size, round, and bright red. Flesh firm, juicy, white. Flavor subacid, milder than Johnathan but more sprightly than Delicious. Dual purpose, high quality. Keeps well.
Tree Characteristics: Tree is vigorous, hardy and productive.

Parentage / Origin: Splendour x Gala; Agriculture Canada, Summerland, BC
Harvest / Season: Harvest: Fuji season
Description: Small. Cherry red blush over yellow. Outstanding dessert quality. Very long keeper.
Tree Characteristics: Low to medium vigor. Spreading spur-type growth habit.

Chisel Jersey
Parentage / Origin: England
Harvest / Season: Harvest: mid-November
Description: Cider apple. Fruit green with red flush. Bittersweet flavor.
Tree Characteristics: Medium-sized, vigorous tree, a heavy but somewhat biennial bearer.

Cinnamon Spice
Parentage / Origin: Bolinas, CA
Harvest / Season:
Description: Medium sized apple, dark red with some yellow background color. Cinnamon flavored.
Tree Characteristics: Tree of medium vigor, with upright shoots.

Claygate Pearmain
Parentage / Origin: Surrey, England, 1823
Harvest / Season: Harvest: October, Season: December - March
Description: High quality winter eating apple and keeper. Pick as late as possible. Medium to large oblong-conic fruit, green blushed red and russeted. Crisp, juicy flesh. Sugary, aromatic flavor.
Tree Characteristics: Neat, compact tree suitable for small garden. Bears well.
