Rhode Island Greening

Description: Large, yellow-green fruit. Firm, crisp, juicy, tart. Flavor develops in storage

Ribston Pippin
Parentage / Origin: Yorkshire, England 1769
Harvest / Season: Harvest: September , Season: October - Jan
Description: Yellow, flushed bright orange, red blush. Hard, crisp, fine-grained, sugary, rich and aromatic.

Richared
Parentage / Origin: Whole tree sport of Delicious; Discovered in Washington
Harvest / Season:
Description: Only fair color (blush), but better tasting than most modern strains. Flavor is rich and complex, with hint of coconut. Shape is bloated compared to typey Delicious, with wide middle. Pressure tests below modern Delicious strains.
Tree Characteristics: Lanky, strong, non-spur grower.

Richelieu
Parentage / Origin: Ottawa-521 x Ottawa-541; Agriculture Canada, Quebec, 1990
Harvest / Season: Harvest: Mid-September
Description: Medium size. Attractive, juicy, crisp. Very good flavor. Mild to subacid with high sugar and aroma.
Tree Characteristics: Moderately vigorous, spreading. Very Productive, annual, but somewhat slow to start bearing. Very hardy. Susceptible to rusts, tolerant to fireblight and mildew.

Rocket Red Braeburn, PPAF

Rome Beauty
Parentage / Origin: Ohio, 1848

Description: Very round fruit, medium to very large, with handsomely striped to almost solid red, thick skin. A favorite for baking and drying, and outstanding as a baked apple. Inferior for eating due to dryish flesh and very mild, unremarkable flavor. A good keeper on and off the tree. Once a major commercial variety, now losing market share.
Tree Characteristics: Tree medium sized and spreading with age. Terminal bearing, difficult to train. Spur types are often desirable. Precocious and annual producer.Scab resistant.

Rouville
Parentage / Origin: Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Quebec, 1983
Harvest / Season: Harvest: Mid-August
Description: Red over pale green-yellow. Oblate. Juicy.
Tree Characteristics: Vigorous, upright-spreading. Precocious, consistent bearer. Resistant to scab.

Roxbury Russet

Roxbury Russet
Parentage / Origin: Roxbury, Massachusetts, early 1600's
Harvest / Season: Harvest: late September - early October, Season: October - April
Description: Greenish-bronze and yellow fruit. The classic russet, like Golden Russet but even higher in sugar (12.87%), and a bigger producer. Possibly the oldest named variety in America.
Tree Characteristics: Resistant to scab.

Royal Russet
(Also known as: Brown Russet)
Parentage / Origin: England, 1567
Harvest / Season: Harvest: late October - November, Season: October - Mar
Description: Large and characteristic russet skin is brown with a greenish-yellow undercast. The yellow flesh has a sweet, nut-like flavor.
Tree Characteristics: The tree is a vigorous annual bearer, resistant to scab and mildew.

Rubinette
Parentage / Origin: Golden Delicious x Cox Orange; Switzerland
Harvest / Season: Harvest: early October
Description: A very sweet apple with a slight tang. Bright red stripes cover the golden undertone with a slight russet. Fruits medium in size.
Tree Characteristics: Growth characteristics are similar to Golden Delicious.  Somewhat resistant to mildew and apple scab.

Rubinola
Parentage / Origin: Prima x Rubin; Czech Republic
Harvest / Season: Harvest: Ten days before Golden Delicious
Description: Medium to large. Attractive, bright red skin. Yellow, firm, fine-textured, juicy flesh. Very good sweet flavor. Aromatic.
Tree Characteristics: Vigorous. Spreading. Productive, consistent bearer. No thinning necessary. Fruit hangs well. Scab resistant.

Runkel
Parentage / Origin: Chance seedling; Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA, 1940
Harvest / Season: Harvest: October; Season: Through March
Description: Medium to large. Pink over green-yellow. Smooth and waxy with pronounced lenticels. Sweet, rich flavor. Very juicy, fairly crisp.
Tree Characteristics: Vigorous. Upright. Consistent heavy producer.

Rusty Coat
Parentage / Origin: Connecticut
Harvest / Season: Harvest: October; Season: excellent keeper
Description: Darker than Golden Russet with drier flesh. Very good flavor, excellent for drying, sauce and eating.
